The Irish Bouzouki
![]() |
Donal Lunny of Planxty fame first started using the bouzouki (a traditional Greek Instrument) for Irish music back in the 1970's and since then the instrument has evolved very rapidly to become the Irish Bouzouki or simply "Zouk" It has four pairs of unison strings usually tuned G,D,A,D from bass to treble although other tunings are commonly used. It delivers a very powerful driving rhythm sound for accompanying songs or tunes.
Scale Length 645mm
The photograph above shows one I have recently made for Andy Glass using lacewood for the back and sides, spruce for the soundboard and ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. He uses the instrument on the CD "Crossing Currents" available from :-
